BMP stores image data with little compression and can produce large files. It is mainly useful when a workflow specifically requires BMP.
Converting a file changes its encoding. It does not recreate detail that was already lost in the source image. For an important image, keep the original and compare the converted preview before deleting anything.
A format conversion can make a file larger or smaller depending on the source, dimensions and encoding settings. If the output is larger than expected, compare another format or reduce dimensions before compressing. If visual quality matters more than size, keep a higher-quality output and retain the original.
